My Level Design Work
My latest work from FEAR 3 can be viewed here: Prison and Sewer Play Through
Examples from Tony Hawk: Ride are here: Highlight Reel, LA River Reservoir Process Doc, LA River Reservoir, Brooklyn Banks, Venice Beach, Toledo.

On a side note, I facilitated our weapons audio shoot for FEAR 3 which can be viewed on Facebook here.
Master’s Project Report
I finally uploaded my master’s degree project from Purdue to the site. It is a study that takes a critical look at currently available game design and usability heuristics models and compares their utility to techniques already used by game designers to create higher quality games. The relevance of academic research and the connection between academia and industry are also explored.
The report can be downloaded here as a MS Word file. Have a great new year!

Just finished transferring all of the old site over to tomfarnsworth.com. Still need to get the images and video files up and running, but that shouldn’t take too long. Thanks for the bandwidth and storage Ryan!
My Panoramic Photography Progression
My trial and error journey from 360 degree panorama ignorance to near mastery is laid out below. For those of you that don’t know anything about 360 panos, I suggest you check out one of these sites -
Getting started with digital panoramas or Panorama Tools
My initial attempts were met with a number of problems, most of which only became apparent during the stitching process. I was eventually able to solve my problems with a few not so minor tweaks. If you look at the first image you’ll notice that it’s not a complete panorama. When taking pictures for use in a pano, you need to keep in mind that each image has to have enough detail for the stitcher to make matches between adjacent photos. Low detail white walls or blue skies will only create problems for you.

The second image also has some obvious problems. It is very wavy, has some parallax issues by the stop sign, and took way too many photos to complete. I didn’t have a level (which led to the waviness) or any way to eliminate parallax on my tripod head (which led to blurry stitches). With my current setup it was nearly impossible to create a good pano. So I bought a pano head from Kaidan. I also picked up a 15mm fish-eye lense so I wouldn’t have to take as many photos. I use an 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D SLR, but you could probably take panoramas just fine with a mid-grade point and shoot camera.
It’s pretty easy to see the effect that my new gear had on the quality of my panoramas.
Once I had a good base stitch, all I had to do was a little cropping and color correction in good ol’ Photoshop.
After my system was setup and calibrated, I was able to shoot and assemble cylindrical panoramas in less than an hour (including travel). Here’s the stitch from my OpenGL snowsaver.
You don’t always need a tripod to get decent results. Here’s a handheld stitch from Hawaii.
Anyways, if you are into photography and want to turn your 5+ megapixel camera into a 25+ megapixels shooter or just want to get a new view of the world, go ahead and give digital panoramic photography a try.
